What is ELA?
ELA is a year-round life skills enrichment daytime program designed to meet the needs of persons with developmental disabilities, as well as other disabilities, who are 21 years old and older. ELA takes place at 280 Saunders Road in Riverwoods, Illinois. It is a collaborative program presented by The Center for Enriched Living and the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association

Why was ELA created?

  • Enhance the quality of life and other well-rounded daytime program options for adults with developmental disabilities, as well as other disabilities.
  • Provide a flexible schedule for families.
  • Make affordable daytime programs available.
Who qualifies to be in ELA?
ELA participants must:
  • Be 21 years old or older
  • Have a disability
  • Complete an assessment to determine the registrant's participation and staff needs with the ELA program.
  • All registrants must sign a release of information form.
When does the program run?
The program runs from January to December annually. Registration continues throughout the year based on available slots.

Does ELA assist with transitioning from high school?
ELA will work with high schools and parents to transition young adults from school to the ELA program. It is the responsibility of the families to initiate the transition process. Billing for the ELA program will begin with the start of attendance within the ELA program.

What organizations formed ELA?
The Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) has teamed up with The Center for Enriched Living in Riverwoods to create ELA, a program for adults with disabilities. ELA is a collaborative effort that represents the best efforts of the two agencies. NSSRA and the Center for Enriched Living have 35 years experience working with people with disabilities in the Chicago area.

Does one have to live in a certain area to participate?
The ELA program is open to adults with disabilities living in the ELA communities and throughout the Northern Illinois region. Persons from other communities must pay an additional out of area fee of 10% more to participate.
